Day Eight: Soufflé

Category: 40 Days of 40, Good EatsClevergirl @ 6:24 pm

I could not get out of bed this morning. I was (& still am) exhausted. I think that after 10 months non-stop of go-go-go, the sudden onset of holiday has caused a crash. I hope to recover by this weekend.

Birthdays can also be a time to try something new, so today I did just that. I made a soufflé. I’ve always been a bit afraid to cook one, given a) the number of eggs in them; b) the fact that most cooking shows and books label them as “advanced”. However, I’d seen my mother make them plenty when I was young, so I figured that if she could do it, I could do it!

But Miss B. had made a reference to a Soufflé a few weeks ago and I asked if she’d ever had one. She said no but could I make one. I could, but I didn’t own a mix master — kinda essential for getting the whites to puff up enough.

So, Miss B. and G. got me a Sunbeam Mix Master for my bday. :-) So, I spent the last two days researching soufflé recipes online and in my cookbooks and then this evening I made one for dinner. It took me longer to make than expected, partly because I couldn’t get the mix master to turn on — uh, largely because I’d forgotten to plug it in!

In case anyone is interested, I sort of combined Alton Brown’s recipewith the one in Rose Elliot’s Supreme Vegetarian Cookbook and some advice on several other random websites and modifed Alton’s ingredients list using a real garlic clove (crushed), 2 generous teaspoons of dijon, and some thyme instead of the garlic powder and mustard powder. I feel sure that he would probably lecture me on making the sauce too wet by using wet ingredients, but it worked, so there! In my ongoing quest to reduce fat intake around here, I used President’s Choice Celeb Margarine instead of butter, old half-the-fat cheddar cheese, and skim milk. And, yeah, it worked just fine, too.

Anyway, it turned out rather well, if I do say so myself. And now I have a request on for, you guessed it, a chocolate soufflé. So now I am researching that, which took me to the Old Hen Blog and her encouraging words, “I am starting to consider writing a blog about skydiving. I think it might be easier than this.” wOOt.

Day Seven: Getting stuff done

Category: 40 Days of 40Clevergirl @ 10:48 am

Wow, it’s amazing what you can accomplish when you take a holiday and stay home to do stuff and get organised. On Day Seven, I was wished happy birthday by Miss B. — the best part of every day so far — and then I studied up on how to make a soufflé, did the laundry (including the pillows), bought new dryer balls, socks, and vinegar for making herbed vinegars. It was pouring rain, so I also made arrangements to get a new recycling box to replace the one which is broken. and so on and so on.

Then at dinner we drank some of the bubbly I got — the one Ma gave me — with leftover birthday cake. Yummerama!

And so it continues.

Parenthood & Communicating with Baby.

Category: Children, LifeClevergirl @ 10:42 am

You know your brother is a parent when suddenly his emails start bouncing back with “Sorry, email box full” messages. :lol:

And speaking of which, I hope it’s because he’s busy talking to my nephew, because as the NY Times says communication begins at birth.

Day Six: Picnic

Category: 40 Days of 40Clevergirl @ 9:02 pm

I was definitely feeling 40 when I woke up this morning.

It was raining, as only mother nature can do it; full on fall season raining, when I woke up this morning. So, Plan B for the Day After The Night Before Picnic swung into action! Everyone came to our house. So, we ate; we ate cake; G played music and B helped; and the rest of us danced. It was fun.

At 3pm or thereabouts people went home.

I had a sinus headache. I might be getting a cold. I hope not.

Tomorrow is the first day where I don’t need to go to work… Stay Tuned for Day Seven: a Day off!

Day Five: Party

Category: 40 Days of 40Clevergirl @ 8:58 pm

Day Five was all about the Party. I got up early to get the cake and deliver it to the venue. That was a bit of an adventure after Google confused the cake shop for a cemetary. Luckily the young woman working at the Petro Can knew where it was — five minutes down the road. Actually, that little strip mall is like a one-stop party centre. There was also a Sassy Bead Co., a party supply store and a Metro… only needed an LCBO!

Anyway, after cake delivery, I had to get a few things for the early dinner — a small BBQ in our backyard with the ‘rents — and make a pasta salad for Day Six’s picnic. So, being left with no time for a nap, I finally jumped into my outfit, which required some assistance with the strings wherein I discovered the joy of having a man with strong hands. Once squeezed into my corset, we headed to the Heart and Crown on Preston St., arriving shortly before our first guest.

The Heart and Crown on Preston did a great job hosting us. We were really pleased with the service, the food, etc. If you need to host a party in somewhere, try this place out.

The photos are up on flickr — if you click here.

Thanks to the Birthday Advisory Group (aka Miss B), everyone had a glow bracelet to wear and got a loot bag (see previous post on loot bag making).

I drank martinis and some shots that some friends bought me. And of course, I ate cake! mmmmmm…. lots of complements on the cake and not just by yours truly. Everyone wanted to know where it came from.

Thanks to everyone who came to my party. It was great to see you and I had a good time!

Day four: Dine

Category: 40 Days of 40, Good EatsClevergirl @ 11:10 am

The ‘rents are in town for my bday party, so on Day Four we had dinner at Vittoria Trattoria in the Market. Upscale Italian with a great wine list.

I had the beet and goat cheese salad and then the aglio olio — which was far from the traditional thing but yummy nonetheless. Oh, for dessert I had a chocolate molten lava cake — an extremely good one at that.

Given all the eating that is going on, perhaps this idea of 40 days of 40 was not such a good thing?! It may have to be followed by 40 days of dieting.

Day Three: Plan and Prepare

Category: 40 Days of 40Clevergirl @ 7:47 pm

It’s busy at work — prepping to go on leave so I am trying to tie up loose ends. And then of course really busy getting ready for this weekend. So, my sole thought for Day Three? Plan and Prepare… and watch some TV.

I would bore you with the to do list from hell… but I don’t want to bore you. Just trust me on this part: three days into 40 and I am already wondering if I actually have time to celebrate for 40 whole days! meh.

Day Two: Loot Bags

Category: 40 Days of 40Clevergirl @ 7:39 pm

40 loot bags, to be precise. And it’s just occurred to me that I made one for every year… rather than one for every guest, because tbh, it is not really clear exactly how many people are coming. At this point it is *around* 40, but not precisely 40 although it may be slightly over 40, too. I sure do wish people would learn to use Evite properly and work servers would stop screening out evites! *sigh* Don’t people know how hard it is to make loot bags when the number of attendees is imprecise?!

Luckily, the cake I ordered feeds 50.

And what’s in the loot bags? Here’s the photo:

And here’s the list:
* 1 balloon
*1 eco friendly recycled pencil
*1 bag of Higgins & Burke tea
* some tiny stickers
* a whistle candy
* a mini chocolate bar
* a pair of chopsticks

Day One: Turn 40

Category: 40 Days of 40Clevergirl @ 7:43 pm

Today is the first day of my forties. At 3:40pm today, or thereabouts, I turned 40. Big day.

I woke up, took a call about my flower delivery, and then went to work where I found that my colleague had decorated my cubicle with little ribbons and left chocolate on my seat! :-) Later in the day I went to a meeting only to discover that it was a ploy to get me into the Director’s office where they had a cake for me. We all shared the cake and then I walked around offering pieces to people until it was done.

For dinner, G & B took me to the Khao Thai and then to Memories where i had the pecan pie. Yum.

But I am not even close to caked out. Nosirree… the cake is just beginning!

It’s late, so photos to follow soon.

My intention is to spend the first 40 days of 40 just having fun…

Leftovers…

Category: Good EatsClevergirl @ 5:52 pm

Leftovers… what’s wrong with leftovers?! I love ‘em. Heck, many things actually taste better the next day. And yeah, sometimes it can be taken too far — but isn’t that what the freezer is for? It’s not because of the “poor starving people” that I eat leftovers. (Because if there were one outside my front door, I’d likely give him/her my leftovers!) Nosiree. It’s because my mother used to make them interesting. And because I genuinely like eating the same thing two days in a row. ;-)
