Chocolate Chip Cookies with a Difference

Category: RecipesClevergirl @ 3:06 pm

One of my classmates brought in some chocolate chip cookies which purported to be “healthier” than the regular thing. They were a) irresistible b) had a secret ingredient.

If you have picky eating kids and partners, especially, you’ll want to have this recipe.

Academia & the Economic Crisis

Category: AcademiaClevergirl @ 11:25 am

The economic crisis is hitting academia. Now, if you’re involved at all with academia, you probably know about this and I’m not saying anything new. In Canada we were already feeling the situation where retiring professors were not being replaced, where univs. were surviving by increasing their non-tenured sessional contract professors, where newly minted Canadian PhDs were having a hard time getting a job… Three recent articles in the New York Times have taken the lid of the issue vis-a-vis the US:

1) NYT | State Colleges Also face cuts in ambitions A look at Arizona State University cuts and downsizing as an example of what is happening at state or public colleges in the US.

2) NYT | Is it time to retrain business schools? An interesting look at the oversupply of MBAs by universities.

3) NYT | Doctoral Candidates Anticipate Hard Times

It makes me glad to be a PhD with a job, even if it’s not in academia.

Ottawa-Gatineau OLPC Meet-up March 21

Category: OLPC, OttawaClevergirl @ 9:25 am

Dear OLPC Users in the Ottawa-Gatineau area,

Our next meeting will give us a great opportunity to meet our aspiring local OLPCorps Africa group and to get involved. We will be meet and have a presentation from Sam Burton followed by discussion and hopefully some time just to catch up and share all of your recent OLPC discoveries.

Sam Burton is a MA Mass Communication student at Carleton and Project Coordinator of Jamii OLPC. Jamii OLPC is a multi-university, multi-national team applying to OLPCorps this summer. If their application is successful, they will receive funding and 100 XO laptops to deploy to their partner school, Matemwe Primary School, in Zanzibar Tanzania. As members of the Ottawa XO Users Group you have extensive hands-on experience with XOs, and Jamii OLPC hopes that you are interested in getting involved in the project, and providing insight, feedback and suggestions!

For more information on the Jamii OLPC team Click here

Two Years

Category: OttawaClevergirl @ 6:04 am

I moved to Ottawa 2 years ago today.

For the record, today’s sunny warm spring weather (6ºC) sure does beat the grey windy cold welcome I got two years ago. :-)

Gingerbread Hearts & Men

Category: RecipesClevergirl @ 6:42 pm

I’ve been wanting to show you a sample of what Divine Miss B and I did for Valentine’s… but was waiting for the photos to be uploaded. Finalement! And here is a link to the recipe we used. Oh, but I made my own icing using a recipe from good ole Rose Elliot’s Supreme Vegetarian Cookbook (still my fav. basic cookbook).

All in one place

Category: OttawaClevergirl @ 9:23 am

A colleague pointed out City Sales dot ca to me yesterday. It’s great! All the stores weekly flyers in one place.

So much easier to make my shopping list. :-)
