Hero

Category: BloggingClevergirl @ 12:40 pm

Someone was blogging about Cuil, so I thought I’d try it out and vanity searched myself. Among onther things, I found a mention of this blog from here on HERO, a website out of the UK which calls itself “the official gateway to universities, colleges and research in the UK”.

I am quite blown away. Of all the blogs listed on Henry Farrell’s list, the author picked mine… and called it “wonderful!”

“And don’t miss the wonderful Don’t forget your shovel by the educationalist Julia D, on world affairs, books, food, Afghanistan… There just isn’t time enough in the day.”

An there just isn’t enough time in my day to figure out why it is I could not get this from Google or how I got on Henry Farrell’s list of blogs?!

I saw this on Jasonji’s blog, which is highly appropriate given that he is one of my biggest mentors.

I am such a sap; it made me cry.

Thank You

Category: People, The DissClevergirl @ 6:10 pm

One month after the fact… plus … and I am writing thank you notes to the people who so kindly came to celebrate my PhD with me. Wow, what a task! No wonder people have given up the art of writing. The worst part? I do not seem to have my friends mailing addresses because I simply email, call, skype, IM or blog to reach out to them!

So, um, if you were at my cocktail party, please send me your snail mail address so you can receive my properly written thank you note.

thx.

Red & Yellow Bell Pepper Soup

Category: RecipesClevergirl @ 10:39 am

I got the stomach flu this weekend from someone at work. And now in recovery I was looking for healthy vegan things to eat without having to leave the house. This got me to this recipe, which I adjusted by using veggie broth. I had to leave out the orange zest as I didn’t have any. Also, I added an orange pepper because that is what I had. And finally, because I freeze soups for work, I left out the garnish. But still, this recipe was the basis for my creation and it was well worth noting!

Try it. Very Easy!

Maman est chez le coiffeur

Category: Canada, Movies, UncategorizedClevergirl @ 8:36 am

I went to see this highly recommended little Québecois film at the Bytowne last night. Maman est chez le coiffeur. (more info available here and the trailer here).

It was a delight. Set in 1960s Québec, the film starts with school getting out for the summer. The children spend the summer playing and running free, but behind the walls of their perfect homes life as many of them know it is falling apart. The lives of the three main children are disrupted by their mother’s departure leaving a trail of saddness and confusion explored through the lenses of different childhoods (age 15, 12 (?), and around 5 or 6). Very well done.

You must see it.
