Salif Keita, to be precise. I may not have much experience of the African continent, but back when I was a student at SOAS, some mates & I would sometimes go to this music hall/bar place which mostly had live African bands. It was amazing and that’s where I got a taste for African music. Well, recently one of my colleagues lent me a few CDs. My fav. is Salif Keita. So I am totally excited by the prospect that he will be here in Ottawa soon. Whohoo. Ottawa, It’s not all bad.

Dear Neighbour,
Dear Upstairs Neighbour,
Given that you keep a Golden Retriever in a small one-bedroom apartment who barked every day for the first month that you lived up there AND given that in the first week you decided it was OK to bang nails into walls at 10pm at night until my neighbour came banging on my door telling me to stop banging nails (oops! mistaken identity…), Given all this, I get the idea that you are not used to living in apartment buildings.
However, today you have outdone yourself. It is SUNDAY on a long weekend and so far, you have spent several hours banging nails, vacuuming and dropping things on the floor, well into the evening hours. You just capped this off by dragging furniture across the floor for 10 minutes at 8:45pm.
Thank you for that.
I sure hope you come to the realisation that living in an apartment building means that people can hear your every move!
Your Downstairs Neighbour.

Maputo, Mozambique
The blog hiatus might have tipped you off that I’ve been on the road again. This time I was at a conference in Mozambique. (all shared photos here)

The Blood of Flowers
On the way home I bought a book to read in Jo’burg airport (there is a pretty decent bookstore in the inat’l departure area in case you’re ever in need like me). I read half a chapter and was hooked. By the time my next flight left Zurich, I had finished it. Wow. What a great read.
Read it.

Peer Review Revisited
Remember this? Well, PR1 still doesn’t think it should be published. PR2 on the other hand noted that i had addressed most of the comments and stated, yet again, that it should be published. The final decision? The editors have decided to publish it.
I have until May 19 to make final revisions on it. Not that any were really requested of me.

How much is that doggie in the overhead bin?
On my flight home, a fellow passenger brought her lap dog in one of those dog purses. The stewardesses insisted on putting it in an overhead bin for take off and landing, which resulted the bin above my head yalping a lot. (obviously I was not on Air Canada, which insists on putting all animals in the hold nowadays)
There were also tense scenes when the fellow passenger decided doggie was cold and needed to be taken out of dog purse, wrapped in an airline blanket, and held like a baby. The stewardesses had to remind the fellow passenger of airline rules, the passenger said, “It’s not a dog, it’s a baby!”, the stewardess was reticent and explained the problem with allergies.
My seatmate said that yalping doggies are better than screaming kids, but I dunno. I’d rather have peace and quiet either way.
