Break Time

Category: Emergency Education, The DissClevergirl @ 2:53 pm

You would think that double timing my life would be over now that Diss is defended, bound, and I am just awaiting convocation. But no! Revising this paper is killing me. I haven’t gone out since yesterday morning, my apt. needs a good clean up, I’m low on sleep, low on humour, wearing my PJs, am hungry, and need to get this thing wrapped up and shipped off to the journal for another beating round of peer review by midnight. Why midnight? Well, that will give me 7 hours to pass out and sleep before I have to get up, go to my day job, and start all over again.

If WordPress had moods (like LJ) right now my mood would be: grumpy.

Never Enough

Category: SongsClevergirl @ 5:33 am

However much I push it down
It’s never enough
However much I push it around
It’s never enough
However much I make it out
It’s never enough
Never enough
However much I do

However big I ever feel
It’s never enough
Whatever I do to make it real
It’s never enough
In any way I try to speak
It’s never enough
Never enough
However much I try to speak
It’s never enough

However much I’m falling down
It’s never enough
However much I’m falling out
It’s never enough
Whatever smile I smile the most
It’s never enough
Never enough
However I smile
I smile the most

So let me hold it up
Just one more go
Holding it up for just once more
One more time to fill it up
One more time to kill
But whatever I do
It’s never enough
It’s never enough

It’s never enough

Medic Alert for All Canadian Children in Need

Category: Hyperallergy GirlClevergirl @ 7:12 am

I was pleased to see the Cdn gov’t announcement on more funding for the Canadian Medic Alert Program aimed to provide bracelets for all Canadian children who need them click here for press release.

I’ve been wearing a Medic Alert since I was 16. Medic Alert Bracelets are great because the individual with the problem, doesn’t necessarily have to tell everyone about it & gets peace of mind when out in public that should something happen, people *will* know how to help.

You can read more about them here.

Peer Review

Category: Emergency Education, The DissClevergirl @ 5:10 am

If I’m not responding to your emails, iChats, and Skypes regularly, or simply not logged on much at all, there is a reason for it. The fact is, a paper I submited to a peer-review journal back in late Nov./early Dec. made it through round one. But the two reviewers quite simply disagree completely in their comments. That is to say, Peer Revewer 1 (PR1) does NOT get it while PR 2 loved it. And the editor has asked me to address PR1’s comments more than PR2’s. Balancing this is difficult and it’s due back at the end of the Month (i.e. must be done by next weekend).

The issue for me is that I am with PR2. PR2 read and understood the paper for what it is. Understood the message I’m trying to give the field relating to what I found during my Diss research. But PR1 wants me to turn it into something else entirely & in fact the two of them often disagree completely.

Melting Guns

Category: Cool, Emergency EducationClevergirl @ 3:49 pm

My Friend John Ricker, who melts guns and turns them into either useful objects (Park benches) or art out in San Francisco, has been highlighted in an article and a video in SF Gate today. (you can also check him out here at his website)

Whenever I see John, which is rare tbh, we discuss conflict, war, and education. John’s perspective and his work always serves to remind me that there might be another way to “teach peace”, which is by asking that simple question you’ll hear at the end of the video: “Who is it OK to kill with that gun in your hand?”

He’s taking the show on the road soon, so if it’s coming your way, check it out.

One Year On

Category: OttawaClevergirl @ 10:25 am

I moved to Ottawa one year ago today.

There was definitely not as much snow last year as this year. And just to remind me of that, it is snowing this afternoon.
