Mass Delete This LJ

Category: Blogging, UncategorizedClevergirl @ 8:13 pm

So the biggest news in the blogosphere tonight is what LJ has done. Also check out The CEO’s statement to the LJ community. Let me be clear that I disdain pedophilia as much as — and given my work/research perhaps much more than — most people who are not pedophiles. Indeed, I once used the lyrics to this Cure song as the opening for an undergrad paper I wrote on child sexual abuse. However, I disdain respect for rights, people, and proper procedure as much. Rather than having some police unit sweep in, identify the real pedophiles, and have them arrested, LJ chose to “permanently suspend” perhaps more than 500 accounts (communities and personal journals).

These communities/journals include fandom communities, ficition writing communities, a community which was reading the book Lolita, personal/community LJs of survivors of rape/incest/pedophila/abuse (nothing like a little victim blaming LJ).

There is a corner of LJ well beyond the academic corner in which jumpinjulia thrives, which uses LJ as a space to receive and to give victims of different crimes support. Is this therapeutic space, not to mention the many other ways in which people use LJ to create community, to learn and to support one another, not something to be proud of? Apparently not.

Pedophiles need to be brought to justice, not simply banned. Victims need space to feel and to be safe. And the rest of us need space to learn, from fiction & from autobiography, what it’s like to live in someone else’s shoes.

I have used LJ in the past as a teaching space, but I really think that if I were to run another class, I’d try something like greatestjournal. I want to teach in a space I can trust; a space which supports learning and personal development; a space which believes in freedom of speech.

Isn’t it ironic that in the end it is actually LJ which out dramas all other forms of LJ drama?!

War’s affects on Children in a Song

Category: Children, Emergency Education, The Middle East, UncategorizedClevergirl @ 7:29 pm

Unknown to No One is an Iraqi “boy band” — so yes, this song is a bit cheesy, but is about much more profound subject matter than your average boy band focii. But the important thing that I want you to notice is the video content. Its a bunch of boys in a war zone playing war games. This acting out was commented on in one of the Hometown Baghdad videos I wrote about recently. There’s occassionally some talk in the aid literature/world about how boys tend to act out violent war games constantly if they’ve lived through war. Back when I worked in camps, we tried to offer alternative play opportunities for all children. But I suspect that one of the ways their psyches works out their experiences is through war-related play.

I haven’t seen much research on war-affected children’s games/play and if anyone has some, let me know about it, OK?

Hookah Health

Category: The Middle East, UncategorizedClevergirl @ 4:08 pm

The WHO has issued a report saying that smoking a hookah (aka sheesha, hubbly bubbly) — or a traditional Middle Eastern water pipe — is just as bad for you as smoking cigarettes.

CSI Ottawa

Category: Ottawa, UncategorizedClevergirl @ 10:18 am

Depending on the route to work/supermarket, I pass by Ottawa’s version of Church St. in Toronto. Here it takes up one old house converted into a bar/restaurant with patio out front. Ever since the weather got a bit sunny, the patio has been *filled* with gay men drinking drinks and basking in the sun.

Yesterday I passed the place on my way to the supermarket, but something was different. The place was devoid of customers. Instead, there were several police cars out front, a yellow “police investigation do not cross” tape circled the patio, and two men dressed in those white paper “do not contaminate the evidence” suits knelt on the ground going through every inch of dirt with a fine tooth comb.

Being a fan of the CSI TV shows, I immediately knew what was up… it was CSI Ottawa!

Seriously though, it was kind of scary. I haven’t been able to find any references to it online. But, I hope that everyone is OK & everyone will be back out on the patio basking in the sunshine again soon!

Dust Free

Category: Cool, Life, UncategorizedClevergirl @ 9:11 am

So I went all out and bought myself one of these babies. And I just have to say that omg, it lives up to both the TV hype and the recommendation I got for it from G. :-D

Now my apartment is dust free, but I still have allergies from the trees ‘n stuff outside.

To Do:

Category: Life, UncategorizedClevergirl @ 7:39 am

This weekend…

*buy a vaccum cleaner before I die from dust bunnies

*go shopping for food.

*the gurlz from work are dropping by on their way out to salsa this evening, which means I should prolly clean up a bit.

*go salsa dancing with gurlz from work (& some reluctant boyz might show up, too)

*call friend who left msg. 2 days ago.

*laundry would prolly be a good idea.

*I’ve been putting off reading Ishmael Beah’s book for a month.

*the weather is gorgeous, must got out for a walk that doesn’t include walking in order to transport myself from A to B.

*washing my balcony chairs might be good, too.

*I want some planters for my balcony, but you know, I haven’t seen any interesting ones.

…ugh, better get a move on!

Arabic pop for Diss, because Diss is currently off dancing with Mr. Supervisor. ;-) I wish I could say that I’m using the time to catch up on my sleep, but there’s so much going on. It’s hot & I don’t have fans, yet. I’ve got a million things to catch up on, too. And then there’s the Salt Mines. I must say that I’m thinking hard about where I want to take my career. What’s best for me and for the issues which are important to me? Where & How can I make the biggest difference? Can I make a difference at all?

Who knows? In the interim there’s always Khaled & Diana Haddad.

Sent!

Category: The Diss, UncategorizedClevergirl @ 7:37 pm

I have just sent Mr. Supervisor Draft 5.

(Well, it’s labelled Draft 4, but earlier iterations were before the whole thing was put together…)

Anyhoo, I’m going to crawl to bed now as I have to get up early and trundle off to the salt mines (aka my paid job). I’d rather be going on holiday, but I guess this will have to do.

And yet another wait begins…

x-posted to Jumpinjulia

Here, but not at Jumpinjulia, there should prolly be a song dedicated to diss… but I’m too tired to be bothered. Maybe tomorrow!
