On Sunday my ISP borked out, again. Last time this happened, they screwed around and made excuses for 3 weeks before sending me a new modem. This time, they fixed it within 4.5 working hours. I’m skeptical as to how well they fixed it, however, afterall this morning the line reset itself which seems to be the first sign of trouble!
Anyway, I’m sitting there on the phone with the “technical assistance”-wallah on Sunday and all I can think is, “If more than half the world wants internet access, it has to get better than this!”
A two-day conference is being held @ UofT on Women, War & Learning on April 6-7. It’s free to attend. And I’ll be giving a presentation there on my Diss results as they relate to women’s remembrance of their childhood experiences of education during war.

SF Gate | Green
I just found out that Gregory is thinking of joining the “green blog” revolution. His column is only amusing because last time we spoke about blogging I told him that i have 5 blogs — making up for the rest of the family. At the time this included a so-called “green blog”, ZeroCostComputing for those who remember!
I question why enviornmentalists think blogs are “green”
. Sure, they promote environmentalism, reach a wide audience, and do not use paper, but they also take up space on some of the most unenvironmentally friendly hardwares of the modern world — the computer, the server. (Just ask the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition) The more blogs there are; the more toxic waste there is; the more un-green the blog becomes.
You should blog, big brother, not because it’s “green” & not to become a ‘Net legend… but because you want to, you need to, you can.
G&M | “Earth Friendly” Firm sells to giant Colgate
Last week it was The Body Shop (which frankly long ago gave up it’s enviromental ethos). This week it’s Tom’s of Maine, which is much more a of a problem IMHO. What am I going to use to brush my teeth with now?
People living in the 416 area code of Toronto make fun of the 905 (or outter suburbs) area code for… well, for sucking. It’s a bit of a blood sport around here, actually. And don’t get me wrong; there is plenty of room for improvement in the 905.
Today I had the privilege of picking up the divine Free Dragon at the airport and reminding myself that parts of the 905 have a purpose which we cannot top south of Steeles. It’s the food. You cannot get better Chinese food than around the Pacific Mall. But this time we ate South Indian at Komala’s, which is just across the road and down a bit. It was so authentic that when a woman working there berrated me for not finishing my rice, I told her that I have to watch it due to not yet having a husband and she responded by suggesting I might be interested in a couple of the other customers in the restaurant! In the same mall as Komala’s is a T&T Supermarket where we stopped by for some “Hong Kong” Tea. Yummmmmmy! If you think whatever you’re eating in the 416 is authentic, think again.
(I can easily be persuaded to drive you there from the 416 so you can see what I mean)
Bob, of Weebl and Bob, has got himself a blog. Appropriately in myspace, too!
BBC | hackers get windows working on a Mac
Yes indeed it was only a matter of time. My big fears are the viruses, the worms, and the general tininess of all things MS. I don’t really know/understand how people can find this exciting. I find it scary!
My local supermarket has just undergone a major renovation — first time in 30+ years? All fine and good. I was passing the new olive bar today and noticed that they’ve added various pickled and roasted veggies/veggie “salads” to the olive bar. Nice touch, except one of the salads they added is a marinated seafood salad. There is absolutely nothing to stop people from contaminating the olives and veggie salads with seafood drippings or to stop people from using the spoon for the seafood salad in the olives etc.
I grabbed the Deli Manager and explained the problem of cross-contamination and hyperallergies to seafood. She took the seafood salad and moved it to the front corner of the display, so that people will hopefully not drip on the other salads. But that won’t stop people from using one spoon for the others. She said she’d mention it to her supervisor, but that’s hardly taking serious action is it?
I guess I’ll be buying my olives in another store from now on.
My chives and my lemon balm are sprouting. And I see a bit of green in my oregano pot, too.
