hey I think i saw ur comments on an allergy-health thread on a blog by allergyGirl, so i linked over to this blog, looks cool...i'm currently working on my masters here in frigid rochester, just South of ur much-more-frigid-nation of ohCanada, hah i know it's tons colder up there but I previously lived in Louisiana & California, so this is reeeeeeally cold. Anyhoo i wanted to ask u some academic-teaching questions, as i'd read some comments u'd made re: academia, etc., primarily wondering about advice involving teaching careers, but didn't know where i should post my questions/comments [i didn't see an email address so i just decided to use this "about" page]. Btw, i'm old enough to have been in undergraduate school bak in the day when Talking Heads were only played on college radio--yeah they finally reached Mtv & got a bit famous;-), well, p3ace, Rob

Cough cough cough!!! CG, This is not going to fly to this *Montrealer*! Je proteste! Hehehe...

For years, my weekends were blessed with a convenient trip to the "Patisserie de Gasgogne" ( http://www.degascogne.com/ ), they were just a few minutes of walk from my home. That patisserie won several culinary prizes and for *good* reasons, I can vouch that *personally* !;)

They got relocated a few years ago, so it's no longer the convenient trip that it used to be. Le sigh, indeed! ;)

Me too I was eating "macarons" (YUUUUUMMMY!), had also the best croissants, best "petits petits pain au chocolat". No contest about their baguette either. It reminds me of my breakfasts in France... and also the fact I gained a few pounds, but I'm digressing here. ;)

Thanks for the address! I think that I have to visit their store the next time I'll be in Toronto!!!

Amazing. I've read some of the biographies of some of these people, in particular Lincoln and Grant. Grant's story is at times so heartbreaking and at other times so unbeliebably inspiring and at even other times both that it's hard to imagine what this quiet, somewhat shy man must have thought about the ups and downs. His acceptance of reversal was actually key to his success as a general.

A little known story about the brief time when he and Sherman, his best friend in failure and in success and the man whom he saved from the brink to lead the march to the ocean that ended with the occupation of Savannah and Lee's unconditional surrender at Appomattox to Grant and the end of slavery: During the Union's near-disaster near a small church called Shiloh, Grant and Sherman both arrived late to the battle which had started as a skirmish. Attempting to reverse the near-full flight and rout of their troops from Confederate forces, both men waded among their men and led small parties personally back into an apparent disaster. When some of the soldiers saw this they eventually returned to fight under both men, who were nearly killed several times during the engagement.

Sherman, as he told it, himself not given to effusiveness, found Grant alone lying down with minor wounds, wordless.

He looked at the downcast Grant for some moments then said, "Bad whoppin' today, Grant."

Grant looked up at him and thought about it. Then he said, "Yep, Sherman." He thought some more. "But we'll get 'em tomorrow."

They did.
