It’s [almost] all Farsi to me!

Category: Conferences, Cool, UncategorizedClevergirl @ 11:43 am

Pretty much everyone with an online life of some sort is prone to the occassional vanity search. I am no exception. Today I was flummoxed to stumble across this reference to me. It’s in Farsi (or maybe that’s Kurdish as the homepage says the site comes in both lanaguages). As far as I can tell it refers to the presentation I gave at the Women War and Learning Conference in early April. But beyond that, I have no idea what it says!

How NOT to attend an Academic Conference…

Category: Conferences, UncategorizedClevergirl @ 7:55 pm

Note to people who attend academic conferences: It is RUDE to attend a panel as an audience member and then to spend 15 minutes of someone’s presentation talking to your buddy so loudly that other audience members shush you. And it is more rude not to stop your chatter until the presenter links your constant chatter into her comments about corporal punishment by saying, “for example, the gentlemen at the back who are chatting so loudly would have long ago felt my stick upon them”. It is beyond rude to then ask the presenter who her research participants were, and to claim that she didn’t adequately describe them during her presentation, when in fact you simply weren’t paying attention during that part of the presentation. And if you have to be that rude to ask such a question, then the least you could do is NOT leave the room before the presenter has a chance to answer your question. In case you want to know how I answered this question… I said,

“Finally, I was also asked to clarify who my research participants were even though I spoke at length on this subject during the presentation. Since the person who asked this question is no longer in the room, I do not feel the need to answer this question unless someone else in the audience would like me to. Please raise your hand if you’d like me to answer that question.”

No one in the room raised his/her hand, so I did not answer your question. Next time you go to a conference… hang out by the tea table and don’t bother with the panels, OK??!!

Women as Global Leaders Conference

Category: Conferences, UncategorizedClevergirl @ 8:21 am

I’ve just received an email saying that my proposal was accepted for the Women as Global Leaders Conference held at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi. They had so many submissions that they actually had to turn people away, so I am honoured to be chosen as well as to have had the conference fee waived. I will still need to find about 60% of the cost of flights to Abu Dhabi. It’s not cheap. Cross your fingers that I find some more funding. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know!

I’ve heard nothing but good things about this conference, though I must say that I raise an eyebrow because one of this year’s keynotes is Sherrie Blair.
