And rice, too.

Category: Blogging, Good EatsClevergirl @ 8:21 pm

Three years ago my mother bought me a WMF pressure cooker. It revolutionised the way I cook, and if you don’t have one, you should. Indeed, I feel sorry for myself because I’d like to have two (so that I can make rice in one and a main dish in the other). Anyway, three years later, my mother just bought me one of Lorna Sass’s cookbooks on pressure cooking. I am not sure why she did not get me the vegetarian version, but still, lots to learn in it.

Tonight, with Lorna’s help, I made brown rice in the pressure cooker for the first time. And, yes folks, it’s another cooking revolution by pressure. Cooking time halved — 15 minutes on the heat and then 10 minutes off while pressure is releasing. It got a good review by the local critics, too.

Check out Lorna’s blog here, get yourself a pressure cooker, and get on it my friends!

Oh to be a clevergirl…

Category: BloggingClevergirl @ 9:49 pm

I found out tonight that there are people who do not appreciate my moniker, “Clevergirl”, so as only I can do… I ran home to renew my ownership of the domain name for 2 more years. The fact that the renewal date was/is fast approaching, also had something to do with it.

Apparently, it’s immodest to think of oneself as “Clevergirl”.

Are people seriously thinking that about me? If we review all of the Clevergirls on google, we will see, I think, the opposite. A bunch of pretty humble seeming female bloggers with funky style.

Let us review some of the other “Clevergirl” bloggers:

There is Janice, who owns clevergirl.com — the site I originally wanted. Oh yes Janice, how I covet thee! This, also has something to do with the fact that I love the red dress she is wearing in the photos from her wedding which she posted on that sad post about her late brother. Well, that, and I think she might also be the proud owner of other key clevergirl accounts — the Clevergirl flickr acct, skype account, and the facebook?!

And then there is clevergirl.org, who seems to be named Wendy IRL and is clever at sewing. I am not clever at sewing, just ask my mother who had to finish my grade 8 & 9 sewing projects. With me and the Australian photographer Who’s a Clevergirl? — aka Lisa — housed at clevergirl.com.au, that makes four blogs strictly housed on clevergirl domain names…

But there are a few others who have otherwise picked up on the theme. Here they are:

Managing Email

Category: Academia, BloggingClevergirl @ 7:00 am

Every now and again my OISE email acct gets full and stops forwarding my emails. So, eventually, I have to dig into the actual acct. and delete them to create space for more. Silly process. I understand that a massive email migration project is underway at OISE and I can only hope that it improves things. I have to do some stuff as an alumni to get it done, but anyway… I don’t want to lose the contacts that OISE mail has brought, so I will get on it.

While deleting, I discovered that I’ve been listed as one of the 100 best blogs and website for innovative academics by the website Accredited Online Universities (dot) com. Wow. Kinda fun. :-)

There is *also* and email from the Graduate Junction, which I should probably respond to, too. Just as soon as they unfreeze my acct.

Note to self: Clean out the OISENet email acct more frequently!

Criminal Justice Education Resources Online

Category: Academia, BloggingClevergirl @ 7:50 am

I received an email from Radek Gabek asking if I would give a shout out to his blog, Criminal Justice Online Blog. The blog is a resource for students and potential students of criminal justice programs at US universities. I hope he will consider doing some research and links to programs in other anglophone countries in the future.

I was surprised to learn that Don’t Forget Your Shovel is read by someone interested in the area of criminal justice, but wonders never cease!

The “official” OLPC Blog

Category: Blogging, OLPCClevergirl @ 1:07 pm

Apparently, there is a new blog in town. It is being touted as the official OLPC blog., which I assume is an attempt not to allow OLPC News, or the OLPC News Forum to steal all the thunder. It’s only a year + too late, if that’s the case. There is already a very vibrant virtual community of people who bought OLPCs in G1G1 2007, thank you very much.

Alternatively, I suppose it could be a vague attempt to make the Foundation appear to be more transparent? Frankly that would be welcome news to anyone who has ever tried to contact the Foundation or who has wondered where their donated computer(s) wound up or wanted to know that the learning impacts of their multiple international projects are.

So, like the rest of you, I will be adding it to my RSS Feed.

Hero

Category: BloggingClevergirl @ 12:40 pm

Someone was blogging about Cuil, so I thought I’d try it out and vanity searched myself. Among onther things, I found a mention of this blog from here on HERO, a website out of the UK which calls itself “the official gateway to universities, colleges and research in the UK”.

I am quite blown away. Of all the blogs listed on Henry Farrell’s list, the author picked mine… and called it “wonderful!”

“And don’t miss the wonderful Don’t forget your shovel by the educationalist Julia D, on world affairs, books, food, Afghanistan… There just isn’t time enough in the day.”

An there just isn’t enough time in my day to figure out why it is I could not get this from Google or how I got on Henry Farrell’s list of blogs?!
