The Great Flood

Category: Pakistan, People, SongsClevergirl @ 7:50 am

A current fav. song of mine — Sleep through the Static by Jack Johnson.

It is rainy hard today which reminds me of the news reports coming out of Pakistan and those terrible floods. I’ve been following the news and feeling as helpless as anyone to do anything. The aid system is gearing up — and locally has already kicked into high gear, but the images are nonetheless frightening and simultaneously amazing. Amazing because they document human ingenuity, adaptation and propensity to survive. They also document the aid effort, such as it is. Frightening, because the situation is so desperate.

So today, on this rainy Sunday in Ottawa, my thoughts are of and with Pakistan.

The Koreans believe that the earlier you learn to use chopsticks, the better, because it builds intelligence. So by that measure, 17 month-old Xeno here, should be the next Einstein. ;-)

I kinda always knew…

Category: People, SongsClevergirl @ 9:39 pm

I’m another ex-girlfriend on your list
But I should have thought of that before we kissed
I’m another ex-girlfriend on your list
But I should have thought of that before we kissed

I’m about to give you away for someone else to take
I’m about to give you away for someone else to take

We keep repeating mistakes for souvenirs
And we’ve been in between the days for years
And I know that when I see you I’m going to die
I know I’m going to want you and you know why
It’s going to kill me to see you with the next girl
‘Cause I’m the most gorgeously jealous kind of ex-girl

But I should have thought of that before we kissed…

Backlash: Women Bullying Women in the Workplace

Backlash Women Bullying Women

Today’s NYT has an article on a topic close to my heart, that is an article on women bullying one another in the workplace. Having been the victim of such a thing, I am pleased to see that someone has taken this bold step to address it in writing, in the open. Many of the things that are said in this article are actually things I said and felt at the time and it reflects my experiences so closely that I have to blog the article here.

Anyone who has been to an all-girls school can tell you how cruel and nasty girls and teen girls are to one another. It’s all encompassing, inside and outside the classroom. It’s petty. It’s a power of wills and words. There is nothing more cruel than the way young women treat one another. My parents used to tell me not to worry, that they would grow up and get over it. But as I’ve discovered in the last year, they don’t get over it. They just get more nasty and use the same tactics to try to get ahead at work.

As one person says in the article, it’s high school all over again.

Thank You

Category: People, The DissClevergirl @ 6:10 pm

One month after the fact… plus … and I am writing thank you notes to the people who so kindly came to celebrate my PhD with me. Wow, what a task! No wonder people have given up the art of writing. The worst part? I do not seem to have my friends mailing addresses because I simply email, call, skype, IM or blog to reach out to them!

So, um, if you were at my cocktail party, please send me your snail mail address so you can receive my properly written thank you note.

thx.
